How to Care for Your Soy Wax Candle (Wick Trimming, Safe Burning & More)

Why Candle Care Matters

A well-loved candle burns cleaner, lasts longer, and fills your space with fragrance more evenly. At Lanji Candles, every candle is hand-poured in the UK using 100% natural soy wax — and with a little care, yours will reward you with hours of beautiful, clean scent.

Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

This is the single most important candle care habit. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to around 5mm (about ¼ inch). A shorter wick means a smaller, steadier flame, which prevents soot, mushrooming, and uneven burning.

You can use small scissors, or a dedicated wick trimmer. Our Accessories collection includes everything you need to keep your candles in perfect condition.

The First Burn Is the Most Important

Soy wax has a memory. On the very first burn, allow the melt pool to reach the edges of the jar before extinguishing — this usually takes 2–3 hours depending on the size of your candle. Skipping this step can cause tunnelling, where the wax burns down the centre and leaves a ring of unused wax around the sides.

How Long Should You Burn a Candle?

We recommend burning your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time. After that, extinguish the flame, let the wax cool and solidify completely, then trim the wick again before relighting. This keeps the burn clean and extends the life of your candle.

Keep Your Candle Away From Draughts

Draughts cause uneven burning and can make the flame flicker and smoke. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from open windows, fans, and air vents.

Stop Burning When 1cm of Wax Remains

Always leave at least 1cm (½ inch) of wax at the bottom of the jar. Burning a candle to the very bottom can overheat the container and the surface beneath it. Once your candle is finished, the jar can be cleaned out and repurposed — a lovely little bonus of our glass vessels.

Store Your Candle Properly

Keep your candle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the colour of the wax and affect the fragrance over time. The lid (if included) is your candle's best friend when it's not in use — it keeps dust out and helps preserve the scent.
